Geeks on Beer : Tamamura-Honten : Shiga Kogen Miyama Blonde : on location in Japan at Craftheads

Jan 21 : Tamamura-Honten : Shiga Kogen Miyama Blonde : on location in Japan at Craftheads from New Brew Thursday on Vimeo.

This week New Brew Thursday goes international! We find ourselves in the Shibuya District of Tokyo Japan visiting one of the best craft beer bars in Japan, Craftheads. We toss back some craft pizza, and a Japanese Saison called Shiga Kogen Miyama Blonde brewed by Tamamura-Honten.

Koji Nomura joins us to talk about craft beer, and specifically craft beer in Japan. John’s band, Better Luck Next Time, was touring so we included a little of the footage for that too.

miyamablonde

Japan has an up and coming craft beer community and at the fore-front of that community is Koji and his “Extreme” Craft beer bar [ Craftheads ] In a few years, people will be talking about the pioneers of craft beer in Japan and people like Koji will be the people who are remembered for their part in the revolution. Basically, if you are ever in Japan… Craftheads is a must visit.

The other, and main reason, we were in Japan is the [ Better Luck Next Time ] tour. We did you a favor, and included some live footage of their amazing concert!

This was an epic show, and an epic week, and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed bringing to you.

Since you can’t likely drink a bottle of Miyama Blonde, crack a bottle of your favorite Pale Ale, or Saison, and enjoy the show!

Hottenroth

[ The Bruery ], known for Black Tuesday, Two Turtle Doves and pushing the bounds of craft beer, produces some of the most eclectic beers currently on the market, and Hottenroth fits well into that family of strange deliciousness.

Tyler King, the head brewmaster for The Bruery, joins us in the tap room as we talk craft beer, drink Hottenroth, and sample cheeses.

As always sit back, crack a bottle, and enjoy the show!

Geeks on Beer : Alesmith Brewery : Speedway Stout

Jan 6 : Alesmith Brewery : Speedway Stout from New Brew Thursday on Vimeo.

This week we beat the crap out of Brad, drink some Alesmith Speedway stout, call John out on not having the glasses he promised to have and Stephen rants about bad cheese.. Land O’ Lakes, I am looking at you …

SpeedwayStout

We start off 2010 with a super cheesy intro to explain why Brad has a black eye through the whole show .. the real reason may remain a mystery for the ages, but we do enjoy a bottle of the Alesmith Speedway Stout, talk a little about [ The Bruery ], which you will see more of in the next episode, and Stephen rants about cheese, and why grabbing the packaged singles or anything from Land O’ Lakes is not real cheese and shouldn’t be paired with beer.

So sit back, pop a craft beer, and enjoy the show.

Geeks on Beer : Russian River : Pliny the Elder

Dec 31 : Russian River : Pliny the Elder : on location from New Brew Thursday on Vimeo.

This week we travel to Temecula, CA where we find an amazing craft beer bar called [ Barley and Hops Old World Tavern ]. Scott, the owner, is kind enough to join us for a glass of Pliny the Elder and talk craft beer, craft beer bars, and even a little history lesson in hops.

plinytheelder

We wrap up 2009 with one our personal favorites in the IPA world, Pliny the Elder from Russian River Brewing Company. We also kick off a new feature of our show where we introduce local craft beer bars in our area, and eventually maybe through out the nation. This week we start off with [ Barley and Hops Old World Tavern ]. Scott Salmonsen, the owner, sits down with us and we talk beer.

We pair the beer with some fantastic food provided by Eric, Head Chef for Barley & Hops, that included Blanket Bangers with Stone ground mustard (AWESOME) and pulled spicy chicken sliders that are melt in your mouth delicious.

Aside from discussing what great bar he has, we talk about Pliny the Elder the Roman, and Pliny the Elder the beer. Scott also shares some interesting anecdotes from when Russian River’s Vinnie Cilurzo was local to Temecula.

So sit back, crack open a Pliny and enjoy the show!

Dec 17 : Dogfish Head : Pangaea

Dec 17 : Dogfish Head : Pangaea from New Brew Thursday on Vimeo.

This week we attempt to bring harmony to a fractured world with Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ale’s Pangaea. A beer made from ingredients from every continent on the planet .. even Antarctica.

DogfishHeadPangaea

[ Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ale's ] Pangaea is a great concept brought to realization in Craft Beer. Designed to grace your holiday table this is a complex, full-bodied beer that starts off with a hint of ginger and then goes places you can’t even imagine. We paired this beer with a plate of rainbow sashimi and the flavors exploded. It was awesome!

We also get to meet Yvonne, who has been helping NBT in the background for so long, and Stephen hates punk rock, but can’t decide how he feels about Belgian Tripels.

We have to, again, say thanks to [ Bruisin Ales ]. Bruisin Ales is a great place to go to find beers that are not accessible in your area. We were able to get Pangaea through Bruisin Ales. Bruisin Ales is proof that even though Physics conspires to keep us apart the internet brings us together, and more importantly bring crafts beer to my door.

As always, sit back, pour yourself a craft brew and enjoy the show!

Geeks on Beer : Double Bastard Ale!

Nov 19 : Double Bastard Ale filmed on location at Stone Brewing Co. from New Brew Thursday on Vimeo.

Last week was [ San Diego Beer Week ], and if you missed the greatest 9 days in San Diego history, you can catch a glimpse of how awesome it was from this weeks episode of New Brew Thursday!

We stopped down to the Stone Brewing Company to enjoy a 10 year vertical tasting of Double Bastard. It was pretty incredible. While we were there, we sat with [ Dr. Bill Sysak ] in the [ World Bistro & Gardens ] and enjoyed a 09 vintage of Double Bastard, along with special pairings from the Dr. himself. The best pairing was the Wild Boar ribs, but we also had some stinky cheese, and crab cakes.

We discuss the beer, of course, but also craft beer, slow food, Cicerone, and how you can be an advocate for craft beer.

So, grab a bottle of Double Bastard, crack it open, sit back and enjoy the show!
