This week we head back to our studio away from our studio, Stone World Bistro & Garden where we meet up with Laurie Delk, from 100 Beers 30 Days, for her final beer for the 100 beers 30 days challenge. We talk about why she is doing the challenge, and the various charities that benefit from her beerscapades, such as Parkinson’s Research and Feeding the Hungry.
Check out her blog at 100beers30days.wordpress.com and be sure to donate to the great causes that she is supporting.
For our master pairings with Dr. Bill, we pair up a traditional American brown ale with baby back ribs and cave aged Gouda and our Craft Beer Advocate this week is Dan from Seattle who found craft beer in Japan, and has a great story about it…
Here’s the complete email from Dan in Seattle : Follow him @seattletap
Hey guys! I really enjoy the show! I hope to start my own soon. My advocacy story starts in Japan. After a long time drinking Suntory, Asahi, Sapporo and, Kirin, I was hoping more was out there in terms of flavor and community. I googled bars in Japan and found a link on ratebeer to a bar called “doll dress” in Osaka Japan. Doll dress is a belgian bar/S&M clothing store. Why? I have no idea but I quickly became aquainted with the local and famous beers of belgium. The bar owners introduced me to a vast and growing community of craft beers (called “gee beer”) in Japan that are absurdly niche yet amazing right now. Before I left Japan, I stopped at a bar in Tokyo called “Dry Dock” that actually imported Stone beers. Having never had or heard of Stone, I asked the bartender which was his favorite. He gave me the Ruination IPA. I’ve never been the same. I advocate craft beer every day now. Craft Beer is about to explode everywhere, not just the USA!

This week we join Dr. Bill is his “Cellar of Amazingness”, which has become it’s formal name, and we try two very tasty brews.
The first, in honor of The Bruery’s second anniversary, is a the Rye Papier, one of the four versions put out as a celebration of the first year, signified by a silver wax color. The third anniversary year beer is leather … which doesn’t seem appetizing, but we know Patrick will create something magical yet again, and will likely name it “Cuir”, which sounds better then leather.
We also want to say congratulations to The Bruery for 2 EPIC years, and a huge thanks for making awesome beer, and throwing an awesome 2nd anniversary party!
Dr. Bill pairs this with a Tiramisu, and a Blue Stilton cheese.
After that, we unleash the Dark Lord. However, since this is Dr. Bill’s cellar we don’t open a 2010 Dark Lord. The guys at 3 Floyds have traditionally chosen a different color wax for each year of Dark Lord. The Orange wax tells the drinker that they are about to travel back to the year 2005… which is where we land and enjoy this tasty beverage.
Thanks to DR000 for this great shot of various year Dark Lord and Behemoth bottles.
Dr. Bill pairs this with what’s left of the Tiramisu, and a Rochefort cheese.
It was an evening of decadence.
We weren’t able to include a Craft Beer Advocate this week due to time constraints, but we have a growing collection of amazing stories to share, and still want you to go and check out the Beer Wars movie. This amazing documentary will help you understand the struggle that craft beer brewers go through, and help you understand why now is the time to join the revolution!

This week we are in Fredrick Maryland, hanging with Matt Brophy, the VP of brewing operations of Flying Dog, and overall awesome dude! We drink Raging Bitch, a Belgian Style IPA, which is amazing, and talk about Hunter S. Thompson & Ralph Steadman and their connection to Flying Dog.
Flying Dog was our first stop on the East Coast road trip we took back in March. We were a little tired when we got there, but as soon as we saw how awesome the brewery was and how cool all the people were there, we perked right up, and got down to doing what we do best.. drinking beer. Raging Bitch has quickly become a favorite for all three of us, and we are grateful for the amazing way that Flying Dog received us and took care of us. Thanks guys!
We took a TON of pictures at the Flying Dog brewery .. check them out here : Flickr

Here is Ericks full email : Hey guys,
Well this is erick or otherwise known as thor13 on the twitter. I will
try to make story short just like me. I recently began drinking craft
beer because, I really did not want to give to much money to the big
three beer makers in America. After having tried some the bigger
market beers like Guinness and Heineken. I thought maybe beer isn’t
for me. I then stumbled upon your podcast through Aric or best known
as phatemokid and began watching the show. At first it I was lost of
what you guys were talking about but, I had the same reaction when I
was watching Gary Vaynerchuk on his show, but you guys were just as
passionate about beer as Gary was about wine. I kept watching and you
guys have made try a few new craft beers when other wise I would have
never even thought about getting one. Thankfully I can say I have
never had a bud light or coors light. I could have honestly given you
how many beers, I have tried on one hand before meeting you guys. Now
I try to promote you guys where ever I go even though I still get lost
when I walk into a place like Bevmo.
Thanks for all that you guy are doing,
Stephen, John, and Brad.
This week, we take a break from New Brew’s, and revisit an old friend while we talk with Chris Spradley about Pints for Prostates and being aware, and try not to make too many inappropriate jokes .. of course Stephen fails at that.
Chris is organizing an event to benefit the Pints for Prostates organization on June 19th. ; Tickets are going fast, so pause the show, and get over to http://www.pintsforprostates.com click on the Los Angeles Beer Fest to get tickets.
$45 – gets you great food, great beer, and a great sense of helping to defeat a disease that plagues thousands of men every year. Pay attention during the show for a special announcement of a beer that will also be available, for the very first time, at this event.

This week we journey out to Delaware and visit the original brewpub that started it all for Dogfish Head. We are joined by the man himself, Sam Calagione, as we talk about craft beer, Dogfish’s history & future and the wonderousness that is Randall, the Enamel Animal …
While at the brewpub, we spent some time with Sam in the original brewery, demoing the newest version of the Randall, and a short tour of the distillery .. More of that in a future NBTExtra.
We enjoy a tasty cask conditioned 75 minute IPA, only available on cask in extremely limited distribution.
We also hear from a new winner of the Craft Beer Advocate contest, Jacob, who will be receiving a free copy of the DVD Beer Wars, signed by the creator Anat Baron.
Sam, Mariah and the entire Dogfish Head team really took care of us, and we are extremely grateful for their hospitality.

In my experiences, craft beer advocacy has never been much of a story but rather a way of life. Fighting the good fight of good beer is a war and not one that is easily won. Advocacy is a marathon rather than a sprint. The craft beer revolution may not be an infant anymore, maybe not a cranky toddler even, but we are still living in a world where the craft beer industry is still a child. The community is small and familiar faces are abundant, and that rare release from across the nation or across the pond is probably still obtainable. Still, while a restaurant may offer two thousand wines to choose from, the idea of finding something more complicated than a Sam Adams is just now coming into view. The supermarket down the block might have Sam Adams, but not even any Sierra Nevada. This is why we fight.
While most of my friends actually are beer geeks now (a self fulfilling prophecy, perhaps), I do make the effort to make my other friends comfortably uncomfortable. Just the other week I showed up at a party slinging some New Glarus Berliner Weisse and Belgian Red. I quickly won over a woman who begged to know where to get some of the Belgian Red, though unfortunately my answer was Wisconsin. A victory or not? I don’t know, but the idea that beer can taste so much different from the Stella Artois surely befuddled people and is not something they will soon forget. Maybe Stella Artois isn’t the ultimate beer. Who knows.
In another instance a group of friends was welcoming someone visiting from out of state and I offered to supply the beer for said party. I’m not sure if they expected to find six packs of Anchor Porter and Stone Ruination with a case of Session Lager to wash them down. The host of this party, Richard, was not terribly swayed one way or another, though was interested in my insistence that everyone pour the bottles into glasses while I explained the benefit of aroma to anyone who would listen. While most people shy away from strong flavored beers for converts, it is my belief that throwing people off the deep end is sometimes better than inching into the shallow end of the pool. A harsh taste will not really traumatize anyone, and the life changing experience of having beer redefined for someone before my eyes is too good to pass up.
Move forward to Seattle, some of the same friends and I are there for Penny Arcade Expo and I set the nightly destination to Brouwer’s Cafe, a craft beer bar with a tap and bottle list that will put most anything to shame. For my friend Ivan, who has liked some “IPAs” and “dark beers” I suggest Laughing Dog Dogzilla Black IPA–the “best beer he has ever had” he decalres. For my friend Richard, the not-yet-converted host of the aforementioned party, I insist upon a bomber of fresh Port Brewing 2nd Anniversary IPA, with a feeling that it just might remind him of another sticky product he enjoys. I offer to buy the bomber if he is not pleased, but it was an unnecessary gesture I realized when he ordered a second. I had one hold out from Canada who was “just not that into beer” okay time for the big guns, I order a bottle of Russian River Deviation and tell him to take a sip of that. And that’s the game.
The craft revolution goes beyond just your friends. This is bigger than that. Fast forward to Beachwood BBQ, a local favorite of mine with some renown. I stopped in to have one glass of Julian Shrago’s amazing espresso imperial stout Tovarish, brewed at Pizza Port San Clemente. I sit next to Dan, a man I have never met, but a friendly bloke who says he likes dark beers and stumbled into this place by chance while on business. Naturally, I am in my element and take beer. This guy is already a convert right? I ask him if he enjoys sour ales and use the word lambic. Not so much, he says. Fair enough, but prodding I ask which ones he has tasted. The answer being Sam Adams Cranberry Lambic, a truly appalling fruit beer with absolutely no resemblance to a lambic. This injustice shall not stand to besmirch the good name of lambic, and I fire off my counterattack by ordering a 750 mL bottle of Hanssen’s Artisanal Oude Kriek. I pour us both a glass and see the complexity of funk open up a whole new world for my new friend. I came for just one glass of beer that night, but after Dan ordered a few more bottles to share from Beachwood’s deep cellar, I needed a ride home.
Finally, the promotion of craft beer doesn’t end even with friends or strangers or even the unconverted. I keep an eye out for out of towners travelling to my backyard, Long Beach, California. Just last Sunday I welcomed a beer geek named Joe who flew in to the area for a conference and shuttled him to The Bruery to try their beers for the first time, Hi Time Wine Cellar to help quench his thirst while he is here, went to Beachwood for some beer and smokehouse burgers, and made an unplanned stop at my place to share some beers. I gave him a bottle of Port Older Viscosity and dropped him off at his hotel again. A good day of spreading the love for local establishments to the already beer convinced.
In the future I am expecting a flight attendant from Australia to help shuttle American IPAs to a hops neglected fellow I am corresponding with on BeerAdvocate. The tide of battle is turning slowly in America now, but what about Australia? I’m working on it.
This week we catch up with Dr. Bill at Stone World Bistro and Gardens and we share some Pliny the Younger, that Dr. Bill pairs with amazing shrimp tacos.

This week we hang out at NBT “Studio B” and sit fireside with Daniel Del Grande, owner/brewer of [ Bison Brewing Company ], while tasting his delicious Chocolate Stout.
All of Daniel’s beers are organic, and his brewing methods are sustainable and environmentally friendly, so we honor that by pairing the beer with a selection of gourmet and organic items that all would make for a great party with friends.
This week we find ourselves at [ 21st Amendment Brewery ] in San Francisco with Shaun O’ Sullivan. We get completely crazy, with a full house behind us and talk canning, Partner Brewing, childhood memories, and quote a few movie lines.
We also give some love to our fellow beer geek podcasters [ Hop Cast ], and [ Two Beer Queers ] and even create a whole new IPA named after Brad from the Hop Cast called Beerad IPA! It’s EPIC. Follow Brad here : @beerad
It’s still Beer Week for our neighbors to the north in San Francisco, so we continue our tribute to the San Francisco beer scene with an epic journey to the 21st Amendment Brewery and Cafe on 2nd Street downtown. This month is also Strong Beer Month with 21A and Magnolias, check out both craft beer havens and drink all the strong beers, and get a free glass!

This week we kick off our month of on location episodes in San Francisco with a bang … we get the amazing, and incomparable Brian Brushwood.
We give Brian a small education on craft beer and he gives us a small education on beer snobbery.
February is a dream come true for Beer lovers in San Francisco, with both Strong Beer month in full force and [ SFBW ] starting tomorrow, so we thought we would dedicate the month of February to friends in the north and do a series of episodes on location from various beer havens in San Francisco. For our first episode we conned Brian Brushwood, of such internet fame as Scam School, NSFW, The BB Live and even appearances on the Tonight show, to come and have a beer with us.
We were supposed to shoot at a awesome craft beer bar in the North Beach area called Church Key. Due to some scheduling problems we ended up going up the street where North Coast Pizza graciously opened their doors to us at the last minute.
We take the opportunity of being in a pizza place that serves both Macro and Craft beer to talk craft beer conversion and snobbery with our guest, a self-proclaimed beer slut.
