Geeks on Drinking : The History of Beer, part 1

This week on Expert Drinking we travel through time and explore the history of beer, the impact it had on early civilization.

We talk and speculate about the earliest beers, whether the Egyptians were possibly the first “macro brewers”, and how prayers to the goddess Ninkasi helped you brew better beers.

We also talk about Babylonians and the earliest governmental attempts to gain control over the love of beer, and King Midas and his golden touch.

We enjoy a couple of ancient ales from Dogfish Head Brewery. Stephen drinks Jiahu, an ancient Chinese fermented beverage recreated by Sam, and Bill drinks a 2008 Midas Touch.

This week we head out to the beach, Newport Beach to be exact, and we hang out with one of the coolest brewers in the Southern California area, Derek Bougie from Newport Beach Brewing Company.

Derek talks about the history, and future of the NBBC while we drink Pelican Pale Ale, a 6.0 ABV, nicely hopped American Style Pale Ale, which we pair with a ton of food off their menu, all of which was amazing. This beer pairs wonderfully with the Ahi and with the Ribs.

Derek then gets sent off to see Dr. Bill so he can enjoy a Master Pairings with Dr. Bill straight from the Newport Beach Brewing Company Menu. They do the NBBC ESB with a plate of the Fish & Chips.

We also talk tattoos, since Derek has a some really awesome “beer” tattoos.

Also, the audio on this one is a little annoying, so we apologize ahead of time.

Geeks on Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol : Season 6 Christmas Special

It’s the return of Pandoricast! … again. This time Aric, Janet & Stephen get together to discuss the long awaited Christmas Special getting us revved up for the upcoming season 6.

This week we learn that Stephen hates Harry Potter, Aric hates Christmas and shockingly Janet still hate Matt Smith, but we all agree that we loved this episode!

We discuss the evolution of fish swimming in ponds, memories changing as time changes, the lack of Amy and Rory in this episode, and the emotional considerations of only having one more day to spend with the love of your life.

Stephen also attempts to melt Aric’s brain with a discussion of causality in temporal physics.

We also announce that Vini will no longer be regularly joining us on the show, but we look forward to her popping in as often as she can. She will still be handling the twitter and facebook accounts and will also be posting blog posts here occasionally!

Enjoy!
