well … I wish I was… because dang it.. he is just freaking cool.
I went last night to see this, yes I am aware it has been out for several days. I was at [ Maker Faire ], and had WAY to much going on to squeeze a viewing in while I was there.. so anyway… saw it last night.
First of all I want to say, that this is the coolest movie that I have seen in a long time. Robert Downey Jr. was perfectly cast as Tony Stark and did such a magnificent job on this movie. The story line was great, with a couple of exceptions which I will get to, and had very few “slow” parts. I never felt like I could get up and run to the bathroom and not miss something.
Jarvis, the computer system, and his various robot helpers were great. I love when movies can create an emotional connection with a non-sentient in the movie. (i.e. Wilson in Cast Away).
The Iron Man suit was so awesome…. The creation of it, the look of it, even when he put the freaking thing on .. was just cool.
Comedic aspects of the movie were well balanced.. Not too much, not too little.
There were some problems that I had with the movie. Bear in mind, I don’t like to hate on, or unnecessarily critique someone else’s work, but there were a few things that would have made this movie beyond stellar if they had fixed.
[ SPOILER ALERT ] I don’t give too much away… but there are some
1. The soundtrack really sucked. Don’t get me wrong.. I am a fan of Audioslave, AC/DC, and “Iron Man” by Sabbath may be one of the better songs ever made… (note the title of this post). But in this movie, it just didn’t work. The actual original scores done by Ramin Djawadi should have had much more intensity in the film, but for the most part where vacant. The one scene that I felt the music really added something was in the cave when he was building the original suit. That was cool. Also, what is with Sabbath’s Iron Man being held off till the credits… GAY! That should have been played through the scene where he was stomping the kidnappers in the cave.. That would have ROCKED!
2. “The Dude” as Stark / Iron Monger. To be clear, I LOVE Jeff Bridges. I am a HUGE fan, and watch Tron, and The Big Lebowski at least once a month. Honestly though, Jeff Bridges has two characters. Flynn, and The Dude. He will look or sound like one of them in every scene. So throughout the final sequence where Iron Monger and Iron Man duke it out on the roof top, when Iron Monger takes his helmet off and Obadiah Stane start talking… I completely expected him to ask “Mind if I do a Jay?” … It was distracting and removed the dramatic edge of the scene. They should have kept Iron Monger and Stane separated. That would have helped keep the character more menacing.
3. The end… Really?!, they end the movie with Stark identifying himself as Iron Man…. No.. I don’t think so. Iron Man, was always Stark’s bodyguard, allowing him to remain anonymous, as are all Super Heroes. Being known as Iron Man takes away the mystique and added task that all superheroes have of maintaining duel identities.
Again, the movie rocked. It was uberfantastic… but I think the second one will be even better, and I am already looking forward to it.
Also … Marvel released a possible production schedule for upcoming “avenger” movies ..
April 30th 2010- Ironman 2 .. Plot rumor : Nick Fury (Sam Jackson - if you hung around after the credits) comes back and asks for help to fight the evil Mandarin. (no suprise here)
June 4th 2010- Thor
Thor is a great story … and the concept of a dude in NY who can turn into Thor.. ROCK! I am stoked about this one. IIRC, Thor (or at least his story line) is also responsible for the formation of the Avengers… so hopefully this will be the movie that does that as well.. I would love to see the battle Loki initiated with Thor and the Hulk…. that would be awesome..
May 6th 2011- The First Avenger: Captain America
[ may skip this one, unless they do something pretty spectacular with it... I am not a CA fan ]
July 2011- The Avengers - this will kick ass… I said it here.. you heard it.
